What is student-teaching?
学生-teaching is supervised fieldwork in which 候选人 are placed in the class of a Mentor Teacher who guides the development of the candidate's teaching skills and gradually releases responsibility for planning and instruction to the candidate. Candidates must submit formal lesson plans and are observed by a university supervisor who provides feedback on their teaching. Candidates in the Department of 特殊教育 complete two semesters of 学生教学. 的 first semester of 学生教学 is considered early fieldwork and 候选人 complete 200 hours of supervised fieldwork while enrolled in EDSE 234. 的 second semester is considered advanced fieldwork and 候选人 complete 400 hours of supervised fieldwork while enrolled in either EDSE 217A or EDSE 154, according to their program roadmap. Candidates complete fieldwork in special education and general education settings.
学生教学 Requirements
To be eligible for 学生教学, 候选人 must meet all of the following requirements:
- Have met both the Basic Skills Requirement AND Subject Matter Competency. 学生 teaching courses are restricted by permission code and the department will only allow enrollment in these courses when BSR and SMC have been met.
- Candidates must have a current certificate of clearance (submitted at admission).
- Candidates must have TB clearance (negative TB test in last 3 years or verified TB Risk Assessment form [pdf].)
的 Department Chair and the ASC Coordinator verify each candidate's eligibility for 学生教学.
Department policy further states that students must have a 3.平均绩点0分，没有成绩 incomplete to be eligible for 学生教学.
FAQs about 学生教学
Do I have to find my own 学生教学 placement?
Candidates are not responsible for finding their own 学生教学 placement. 的 Lurie College of 教育 Fieldwork Placement Coordinator and the 特殊教育 Department Chair work together to find appropriate 学生教学 placements for 候选人.
What if I already know where I want to student teach?
Candidates have an opportunity to provide input on their 学生教学 placement and 指导老师 on the 学生教学 application. 的 Department's top priority is to place 候选人 with experienced 指导老师s that display the teaching practices we want our 候选人 to acquire. While 候选人 may suggest 指导老师s the department does not guarantee placement at any specific site or with any specific 指导老师. We work carefully to vet all placements for 候选人.
Can I complete my 学生教学 in a non-public school(NPS)?
Candidates may complete some aspects of 学生教学 in a non-public school if there is a qualified 指导老师 and the students served by the school are applicable to the authorization statement of the credential the candidate is seeking. (注意: Non-public schools are not the same as private schools. 的 department does not permit 候选人 to student teach in private schools.) 的 candidate must still meet the requirement for supervised fieldwork in a general education setting.
